Chapter History |
The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International In 1922 six nurses founded Sigma Theta Tau at the Indiana University Training School for Nurses, now the Indiana University School of Nursing, in Indianapolis, Indiana. The founders chose the name from the Greek words Storgé, Tharsos and Timé meaning "love," "courage" and "honor." Sigma Theta Tau grew out of these women's recognition of the value of scholarship and the importance of excellence in practice and a desire to build a framework to encourage future leaders in nursing. Since its inception in 1922, Sigma Theta Tau International has grown to more than 130,000 active members of 451 international chapters in 92 countries and territories. As an honor society, Sigma Theta Tau chapters extend invitations to nursing students in baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs, and professional nurses demonstrating exceptional achievement in the nursing profession. The Beta Theta Chapter at Large The Beta Theta Chapter at Large represents the collaboration of three area baccalaureate nursing programs. The founding member, the University of Tennessee Health Sciences was the 54th chapter in the organization when chartered in 1972. The chapter underwent rechartering on May 7, 1988 as the University of Memphis joined and again in 2006 as the chapter welcomed the Baptist College of Health Sciences. Today the chapter has over 500 active members and continues to provide opportunities for collegial exchange, mentoring, leadership development and professional growth. |
